“I want to close Gitmo as quickly as we can do it – prudently,” Obama said in an interview on CNN aired Friday, using the abbreviated name for the naval base that houses about 270 detainees. “I am not going to give a time.”

Obama and Republican opponent John McCain have both said they want to close the facility, but would have to find a way to responsibly transfer the detainees to other countries and complete the trials of the more than one dozen who face them.

Obama offered no details of how he would close Guantanamo but said he will order a review of the cases. President George W. Bush has also said he wants the prison closed but his administration has struggled to find countries willing to take the prisoners.
