Equity markets end flat

Mumbai : Indian equity markets closed flat Monday, on the back of weak global markets. There were selloffs in metal, telecom, select power and technology stocks while buying interest was seen in oil and banking stocks.

The 30-share benchmark index of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), the Sensex, which opened at 14,412.99 points, touched a low of 14,281.10 before closing at 14,498.51. It went down by 66.02 points or 0.45 percent compared to its closing figure Friday.

The S&P CNX Nifty index of the National Stock Exchange, which opened at 4,356.10 points, closed at 4,348.65. It went down by 11.35 points or 0.26 percent from its previous close.

The BSE Midcap index, which closed at 5,741.98 points, went down by 0.31 points or 0.01 percent.

The BSE Smallcap index, which closed at 6,891.39 points, went down by 0.25 points.

The market breadth was positive. On the BSE, 1,329 shares advanced, 1,255 declined and 96 maintained status quo.

Top gainers of the day included ITC at Rs.188.60 up 1.62 percent, HDFC Bank Ltd at Rs.1,277.25 up 1.48 percent and BHEL at Rs.1,706.55 up 0.90 percent.

Top losers of the day included Ranbaxy Lab at Rs.518.50 down 3.61 percent, Tata Steel at Rs.600.35 down 2.67 percent and Maruti Suzuki Rs.650.40 down 2.56 percent.
