China mine blast toll rises to 27

Shenyang (China) : The toll in a gas explosion at a coal mine in northeast China rose to 27 with the recovery of the bodies of three missing miners, authorities said Thursday.

The explosion took place at 9 a.m. Thursday when 41 miners were working in the mine in Fuxin town of Liaoning province.

Six of the 14 miners, who moved to safety on their own, sustained injuries in the accident and were recuperating at hospital, the sources said.

The mine began operation in 1999 with an annual capacity of 40,000 tonnes.

Tne mines safety administration has instituted a probe into the cause of the accident.
