Singh was charged with mismanagement of bank funds amounting to over Rs 500,000. A senior official said Madhya Pradesh police picked up Singh late Thursday from his native house in the state’s northern Surguja district.

He was taken to Madhya Pradesh’s Seoni district where he will be produced in a local court that declared him absconder after the irregularity was detected. Singh was the manager of a rural bank eight years back.

The arrest issue has come as a major blow in the poll-bound state as Renuka Singh, who represents Premnagar assembly (Scheduled Tribe) reserved seat in Surguja district, is a popular figure in the state. She was minister in the Raman Singh government till June 2005.
