Obama greets Zardari, hails pledge to return powers to parliament

Washington : US Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has felicitated President-elect Asif Ali Zardari on his election as head of the state and praised the Pakistani leader’s avowed commitment to return unconstitutionally appropriated powers from presidency to the parliament.

“I congratulate Asif Ali Zardari on his election as President of Pakistan. I am glad to hear of his pledge to return this office to its traditional stature, and return to Parliament the powers unconstitutionally appropriated to the presidency,” the senator said in a statement.

The White House hopeful also welcomed the PPP-led Pakistani government’s move on the restoration of judges deposed in November 2007 during the emergency period.

“I am also glad to hear of the restoration of several deposed judges, an important step towards the restoration of a truly independent judiciary,” Obama remarked.
