New Delhi : The railways ministry has set up a five-member committee to suggest measures for reviving the archaic steam engines.
“The steam traction expertise and maintenance committee, as it is called, will suggest various measures and methodology for the revival and maintenance of steam engines and sustaining steam locomotive traction,” a senior railway official said.
This committee will have senior railway officials and retired personnel as members who have expressed a keen interest in reviving the outdated steam engines.
It will submit its report within the next six months.
“With the steam locomotives restricted to a small number, mostly used in seasonal tourist trains and toy trains, there are fewer trained manpower to run and maintain them. The committee will also look for training existing staff for this,” the official added.
As of now, only 30 steam locomotives are in working condition in the country.
