Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police (DGP) will brief Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswamy and other two Election Commissioners Navin Chawla and S Y Quraishi on the ground situation in the state, sources said.

The meeting comes close on the heels of the EC meeting the leaders of seven national and three regional parties this week where divergent views were voiced on the timing of the polls.

While BJP and the Left parties demanded that elections be held on schedule by November end, the NCP and Panthers Party wanted delimitation to be done first before finalising the date.

Congress, however, steered clear of the issue leaving it to the EC to decide the timing.

The National Conference and PDP disfavoured holding of Assembly polls later this year claiming that the situation in the state after widespread violence in the wake of the Amarnath issue was not conducive for the exercise.

In the normal course, the tenure of the Assembly was to expire on November 20. However, the Assembly was dissolved and Governor’s rule imposed following a political crisis in the wake of the Amarnath land row which triggered violence in Jammu region and the Kashmir Valley resulting in imposition of curfew for prolonged periods.
