Ban strongly condemns attack against UN convoy in southern Afghanistan

By KUNA,

United Nations : Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon late Sunday condemned in the strongest possible terms the suicide attack against a UN convoy in Kandahar Province in southern Afghanistan, killing two doctors working for the World Health Organization and their driver, all Afghan nationals, and injuring a number of innocent bystanders, his press office said in a statement. The doctors, traveling in clearly marked UN vehicles, were carrying out a polio vaccination campaign.

The attack came one day after another suicide bombing near Kabul that killed the Governor of Logar Province.

“These unacceptable and cowardly actions show the brutal face of those opposing progress towards peace and reconstruction in Afghanistan,” the statement said.

Ban sent his condolences to the families of those killed in these “heinous” attacks and his best wishes for a full recovery to those who were injured.
