Lucknow : Eight people have been booked for assaulting a divisional forest officer (DFO) along with other forest staff in Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnore district, the police said Monday.
“The incident took place in Rampur village in Bijnore, some 260 km from here, when a group of villagers targeted the DFO and his staff when they attempted to remove encroachments in the village,” police inspector B.P Solanki told IANS.
On Sunday evening, Bijnore DFO A.K. Gupta, along with his staff, had gone to the village to remove shanties and other encroachments from a land belonging to the forest department, the police said.
“After giving directions to evacuate the land, when Gupta and his staff were returning from the site, a group of villagers intercepted Gupta’s vehicle and stated pelting stones at the forest officials,” Solanki said.
“No one was seriously injured in the incident,” he added.
The police are yet to arrest the eight accused, who are absconding after the incident.
