Chandigarh : Former Indian cricket team captain, Sourav Ganguly will play in the 15th JP Atray cricket tournament starting Sep 17 in Chandigarh.
Other star players like Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Suresh Raina, Gautam Gambhir, Rohit Sharma and Munaf Patel are also expected to participate in the tournament, one of the organisers of the tournament said here Tuesday.
The matches will be played at various venues, including Cricket stadium in sector-16, Chandigarh, DAV School (Chandigarh) and Punjab Cricket Association (PCA), Mohali.
Divided into four pools, participating teams will play on league-cum-knock out basis. Top side from each pool will enter into the semi-final stage, said Sushil Kapoor, organising secretary of the tournament.
The tournament will last till Sep 30. All the matches will be of 50 overs each and will be played under the International Cricket Council (ICC) rules, added Kapoor.
“The tournament gives experienced players an opportunity to prepare themselves for the international season, whereas for youngsters, it is a brilliant platform to showcase their talent,” Vivek Atray, convener of the tournament told IANS.
“The tournament is being played in the memory of my father JP Atray. It offers Rs.150,000 to the winners and Rs.60,000 to the runners-up, while the third and fourth position holder would receive Rs.30,000 and Rs.15,000, respectively,” added Atray.
Atray said the tournament committee has also decided to provide financial aid of Rs.15,000 to the family of Late D.C. Worel, Ranji Trophy player who died recently.
