Bangladesh to have information law

Dhaka : Bangladesh’s council of advisers has given the final approval to the much-awaited Right to Information (RTI) Ordinance 2008.

The private sector and six military and civil intelligence agencies are among the 20 excluded from the purview of this first-ever measure that has been welcomed by the media and human rights bodies.

New posts will be created in most government offices and NGOs. Officials holding those posts will provide people with the information they seek within 20 days of receipt of applications, says the ordinance.

People will have to pay fees for filing application seeking information. But people living below poverty line will not be charged any money.
