UAE to set up special environment policy unit

Dubai : A special unit will be set up in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to formulate environment policies for this Gulf nation.

UAE’s Minister for Environment and Water Rashid Ahmed Bin Fahd has issued an ordinance setting up the unit, which will be attached to his ministry, the official Emirates News Agency (WAM) reported.

The new unit will be headed by advisor for environmental affairs to the ministry Sa’ad Eddin Mohammed Al-Numairi.

The proposed unit will develop strategies for protecting the environment and formulate policies for preserving natural resources and the biodiversity in the country.

It will give special attention to international conventions the UAE has ratified, while implementing its environmental policies and programmes.

Another unit is also being set up for coordinating with various national and international environmental agencies with duties of registering various animals and ensuring control over trading in endangered species.

This unit will be affiliated to the office of the undersecretary in the environment ministry, the WAM report said.
