District chief, police official killed in Afghanistan bomb blast

Kabul : The head of a southern Afghan district and his police official have been killed in a roadside bomb explosion that injured four other police officers, a police source said Tuesday.

The explosion went off in Registan district of Kandahar province late Monday, when a vehicle carrying the officials set off the explosive device.

Southern Afghanistan is the stronghold of radical Taliban movement ousted by the U.S.-led coalition from government in the 2001 campaign. Taliban have stepped up attacks on Afghan and foreign troops this year. More than 4,500 people, mainly militants, are reported to have been killed this year.
