EU concerned over humanitarian situation in Sri Lanka

Brussels : European Union Commissioner for External Relations Benita Ferrero-Waldner has voiced concern over the humanitarian situation and human rights violations in Sri Lanka.

“I am concerned about the humanitarian situation in Sri Lanka and would appeal to both the government and the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) that the rights and needs of civilians and those who are internally displaced by the ongoing conflict are fully respected,” EUAsiaNews quoted her as saying in a statement.

Ferrero-Waldner said she was “preoccupied by the continuing disrespect for human rights by all sides and am very concerned by reports of forced recruitment and summary executions by the LTTE.

“These violations must cease and the perpetrators brought to justice,” she stressed.

Her statements came following a meeting of the Sri Lanka Co-chairs of the Tokyo Donors Conference in New York Wednesday.
