Damascus : Syrian Interior Minister Bassam Abdulmajid described the blast in southern Damascus that killed 17 people and wounded 14 others as “an act of terrorism.”
Speaking to Syrian Television, he said that a counter-terrorist unit was now tracking down the perpetrators.
The blast occurred near a security checkpoint along the road to Damascus International Airport at an intersection to Sayida Zainab district.
The district is home to the shrine of Zainab, daughter of the Shiite Imam Ali and granddaughter of the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH). The shrine is visited by millions of Shiite pilgrims every year.
