Mohammad Umar had been sentenced to life and was taken to the court for the final hearing. He fled from there.

“Umar is accused of raping a minor girl and was sentenced to life by the court. However, he managed to escape and we also declared a cash reward for him,” Akhil Kumar, senior superintendent of police – Lucknow, told IANS.

He used to frequently visit his family members in the Thakurganj locality and was arrested late Saturday after a tip-off, he added.

“His family members also asked him to surrender before the court a number of times but he refused and on a couple of occasions he also attacked his wife,” Kumar added.

The police was in constant touch with the family members, who were cooperative, and arrested him following an input from one of his relatives, he added.
