New Delhi : Congress leader and party candidate for Lok Sabha election from Delhi Jagdish Tytler Thursday said he was relieved that “truth has come out” after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) gave him a clean chit in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case.
“I am glad that the truth has come out. I am relieved, of course,” Tytler told reporters here.
Tytler, who is the Congress candidate from Delhi Northeast constituency, was cleared by the CBI in a case related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in the capital, prompting protests by upset Sikhs and raising questions about its timing.
In its final report, presented in a sealed cover, to a court here, the CBI pleaded that the case against Tytler be cancelled.
Asked about timing of the clean chit and if the Congress being at the centre helped, a smiling Tytler said: “The CBI gave me a clean chit when (Atal Bihari) Vajpayee was the prime minister and (L.K.) Advani was the home minister and deputy prime minister. It should have helped me then too.”
California-based Jasbir Singh, who had earlier been declared untraceable by the CBI, in his affidavit had stated that on Nov 3, 1984, he had overheard Tytler commenting on the killing of Sikhs in his then constituency Sadar Bazar.
The CBI visited the US and examined Jasbir Singh, but found his statements “inconsistent, unreliable and unworthy of credit”.
“I didn’t know Jasbir Singh… He’s a false man. The whole thing was concocted,” Tytler added.
