KABUL : Polish President Lech Kczynski has assured his country full support for international efforts to bring peace and stability to Afghanistan.
Speaking at a joint news conference with his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai at the Presidential Palace here on Wednesday, the Polish president said they were equally interested in the reconstruction of the war-battered country. The Polish leader arrived on a surprise visit in Kabul this morning. He later entered into a dialogue with Karzai. He said that Poland would send more troops to Afghanistan to support NATO’s peacekeeping and counter-insurgency measures in the country. The Polish president would not disclose the number of additional troops his country would send to Afghanistan. However, he said that the soldiers would soon be sent to Afghanistan. He recalled that Afghanistan and Poland enjoy cordial ties since long and his government wanted to further cement the friendly relations with the west Asian country. Over 1,000 Polish peacekeepers are stationed in Afghanistan. The Polish president would meet his country’s troops before winding up the one-day trip. For his part, President Karzai thanked the Polish people and government for the moral and material support to his country and hoped that Warsaw would continue support for for lasting peace and stability in Afghanistan.(no pick up) gk.
