A team, led by paediatric surgeon R.M. Chana and comprising Sartaj Wali Khan, Shahbaz Fareedi and Shoaib Akhtar of the surgery department Wednesday operated on Deepu to remove the rod stuck in his abdomen. It took about eight hours for the doctors to remove the rod stuck between Deepu’s liver and the intestine.

The boy, a resident of Khurrampur village in Kanshiram Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh, was pierced by the rod when he fell down from a tree.

According to Chana, the most difficult problem was that the bent side of the rod was stuck in the cavity between the boy’s intestine and liver, but the doctors were successful in extracting it without causing any damage to either.

He said the boy was feeling well and would be able to take liquid food in a couple of days.
