Tehran : Iran Thursday celebrated National Nuclear Day marking the inauguration of the country’s first nuclear fuel plant in the central Iranian city of Isfahan, IRNA reported.
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad inaugurated the atomic plant at a special ceremony held in Isfahan.
The Iranian leader outlined the country’s achievements in the nuclear field on the occasion.
He said Iran has made two significant achievements in the nuclear field; use of nuclear fuel to produce electricity and new generation of centrifuges that multiplies the capacity of the existing centrifuges.
He praised Iranian experts and scientists who were involved in the country’s nuclear project.
Ahmadinejad said the country is self-sufficient in nuclear fuel production for heavy and light water reactors.
The Isfahan fuel manufacturing plant (FMP) is the most advanced centre for production of nuclear fuel. The plant will produce pellets to fuel the heavy-water reactors, he said.
The plant will produce 10 tonnes of natural fuel annually for the country’s 40-megawatt heavy-water reactors in Arak and enriched uranium for the light water reactors.
