New Delhi: Lateef Muhammad Khan, General Secretary of Civil Liberties Monitoring Committee, has appealed to all Muslims to question every electoral candidate about Andhra Pradesh Minority Commission-appointed Advocate Ravi Chander report on the illegal detention and torture of Muslim youths, and pressurize Muslim political and religious leaders to speak on the report at least now.

“Advocate Ravi Chander submitted the complete report to the Chairman, State Minority Commission in October 2008 itself but the Chairman and the Minorities Welfare Minister Mr. Mohd Ali Shabbir are sitting on this report and not presenting the facts before people. They are doing so, for their personal benefits and also to protect the Congress government. Apart from these people, the Muslim political party who is sitting in the lap of congress also trying hard to bury the report, but fortunately TwoCircles.net, which is a news website, flashed this report on its website,” said Lateef M Khan in a press statement.

Andhra Pradesh Minority Commission had appointed Ravi Chander as Advocate commissioner to submit factual report on the illegal detention and torture of Muslim youth. Advocate Ravi Chander in his interim report submitted in November 2007 had clearly mentioned that the Muslim youths were illegally arrested, detained by the police and they were inhumanly tortured, and implicated in false cases. This report reached people through press. National Commission for Minorities took a serious note of it and visited Hyderabad and met the victims who were in jail, met their family members and civil liberties and human rights activists and also instructed the Andhra Pradesh government to stop atrocities on Muslim youth, said Khan.

The final report “confirms all the facts of illegal detention and custodial torture of Muslim youths arrested following twin bomb blasts in the city and all the facts which were put before people by the Civil Liberties Monitoring Committee. If at all the Government has moral responsibility and the Muslim ministers and Member of Parliament had moral courage, instead of becoming hurdle they would have resigned, apologized before Muslims and would have implemented the recommendations suggested in the report. But it is very unfortunate for the Muslims that they do not have courageous leadership. The present Muslim religious parties and their leaders, instead of having fear of Allah they are afraid of Congress government and also mum on this issue for the sake of rewards and awards,” CLMC General Secretary said.

“The government should have implemented the recommendations and apologised to the Muslims but the present Congress government Police is harassing the Muslim youths now in the name of elections. On the other side Muslim political, social and religious leadership is numb, and whatever happened with the Muslim youths, Jamaat-e-Islami does not believe those atrocities and considers the detention and torture equal to nothing and has declared its support to the Congress party by taking “Assurances” from them,” Lateef Khan said.
