Jammu : Unprecedented security arrangements are in place for the visit of Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi who is visiting Jammu Tuesday to campaign for party candidates.
Special police teams have been conducting random searches in and around Vijaypur and Kathua – the sites of the election rallies in the Jammu and Udhampur parliamentary constituencies respectively, while the Border Security Force (BSF) has increased its vigil along the international border with Pakistan.
Since Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who is also on the target list of terrorists, would be joining Rahul Gandhi at the election rallies Tuesday, the task of the security forces has multiplied manifold. “They are two very important politicians of the country, we have to be on our toes,” said a police official.
The two leaders would fly to the two election rally sites by helicopter and the traffic on the roads would be blocked as long as they would be at the election rally sites.
Both Gandhi and Abdullah are among the 50 top political leaders of the country who have been shortlisted by the central home ministry as high on the target list of terrorists.
Abdullah had confirmed that he had received a letter from Home Minister P. Chidambaram that he needed to upgrade his security because of the enhanced threat. The chief minister currently enjoys Z-plus security, which has jammers, special security guards and ambulances in his cavalcade of bullet-proof vehicles.
