Stockholm : Norway has apologised to Sri Lanka after pro-Tamil protesters broke into the Sri Lankan embassy in Oslo Sunday.
The Norwegian government has condemned the unauthorised entry into the Sri Lankan embassy by protesters. The police have been ordered to provide better protection for the embassy, Norway’s Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere said in a statement.
On Sunday, several pro-Tamil demonstrators entered the Sri Lankan embassy during a protest in Oslo. “They damaged windows and broke some things inside, and then disappeared,” a police officer said, adding that no one was arrested.
The demonstrations started in Oslo last week to pressure the Norwegian government to use its influence to stop the violence in Sri Lanka.
Norway brokered a cease-fire between the Sri Lankan government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in 2002, but the truce collapsed in 2005.
According to an UN estimate, more than 70,000 have died in the civil war since it began in Sri Lanka in the mid 1980s.
