Ponte Vedra Beach (Florida) : India’s Sania Mirza and Chinese Taipei’s (Taiwan)Chuang Chia-Jung fought their way past top seeds Kveta Peschke of Czech Republic and American Lisa Raymond to clinch the $220,000 MPS Group Championship doubles tennis title.
The unseeded Indo-Taiwanese pair shocked Peschke and Raymond 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 here Sunday.
The top seeds, who rallied to make it a set all, trailed 1-5 in the tie-breaker. They tried to reduce the deficit but Sania and Chuang maintained the pressure. Sania eventually settled the issue with a forehand winner.
“We played the important points well and I think that made the difference. They came close to taking the tie-break, but we played the big points better towards the end. In the tie-break, it could have gone the other way too,” she said.
It was also Sania and Chaung’s first title win together. The two reached the semi-final at Miami last week.
“This was our second tournament together, so we have had a lot more match practice together,” Sania said. “Kveta and Lisa have been playing for a long time and they’re really experienced. So we are happy to have beaten them.”
Sania and Chuang pocketed $11,000 for the win.
