According to police, the accident took place in the Khulwa area of the city, when the cement bags-laden truck ran over Karan, killing him on the spot. Following this incident, the truck driver fled the spot, leaving behind his vehicle.

Agitated over the death of the boy, residents took to the streets, torching the truck and demanding compensation for the victim’s family. The protesters also damaged public vehicles and a police jeep, police added.

Police had to use force to disperse the agitators.

“The situation is tense, but under control. Additional security, including the Rapid Action Force (RAF), has been deployed in the district,” Deputy Inspector General, Kanpur range, H.R. Sharma told reporters.
