New Delhi : For Amit Sharma, a zonal manager with a telecom company, abandoning his pregnant wife and posting his profile at a matrimonial website proved costly as he was denied anticipatory bail by a city court and sent to jail for 14 days.

His wife Lata alleged that Sharma, who married her in January 2008, soon started harassing for not bringing sufficient dowry. A few months earlier, he abandoned her despite her being pregnant, following which she charged her husband with cruelty.

Her counsel Ranbeer Sharma, while opposing Sharma’s anticipatory bail plea, submitted before the court that despite being married, Amit posted his profile showing him as single on jeevansaathi.com (a matrimonial website) thrice.

This action made clear Amit’s intention that he wanted to get rid of Lata and therefore he should not be given bail, counsel said.

After hearing the arguments from both sides, Metropolitan Magistrate Rekha (who uses only one name) rejected the bail to Amit and sent him to judicial custody for 14 days.
