Lucknow : Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh Wednesday termed filing of a case against Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt for alleged poll code violation as a “flagrant misuse of power”.
“The UP (Uttar Pradesh) government’s action against Sanjay Dutt clearly reflects the flagrant misuse of power,” Amar Singh told reporters during a road show of Nafisa Ali, who is the party’s candidate for the Lucknow seat.
“Sanjay did not make any remarks that amount to violation of the model code of conduct. He only narrated his experiences when he was in police custody. What’s objectionable in that?” asked Amar Singh.
Dutt was booked for violating the model code of conduct by allegedly making an inflammatory speech in Uttar Pradesh’s Mau district Tuesday night.
The meeting was held in the Dakshintola locality of Mau, about 300 km from here.
In his speech, Dutt claimed that the police harassed him in jail because his mother was a Muslim, police said. Sanjay was in jail for 18 months for a 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.
Amar Singh and Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan were also present at the meeting.
