Hingoli (Maharashtra): Four Shiv Sena activists were arrested for breaking electronic voting machines (EVMs) during the first phase of the Lok Sabha polls Thursday in Babhulgaon village near here, police said.
Union Minister of State for Rural Development Suryakanta Patil of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) is contesting from the Hingoli Lok Sabha constituency in eastern Maharashtra. She is pitted against Shiv Sena’s Subhash Wankhede.
“The motive behind the attack by Shiv Sainiks is being investigated. Shortly after the incident, polling progressed without further disturbances,” a police officer said.
Polling began in 13 Lok Sabha constituencies in eastern Maharashtra amidst tight security 7 a.m. Thursday.
Among the early voters were Chief Minister Ashok Chavan and his wife Ameeta, son of President Pratibha Patil Rajendra Shekhavat and state Bharatiya Janata Party president Nitin Gadkari.
