Chennai : An Indian, who had set himself on fire to protest the plight of the Sri Lankan Tamils, succumbed to his injuries early Saturday after battling for life for over a month, police said.
According to the police, S. Shivanandam, 48, who had sustained 70 percent burns, made a dying declaration Friday night that he had taken the extreme step to express solidarity with the suffering Tamils of Sri Lanka.
The body was handed over to relatives Saturday afternoon.
At least eight people have killed themselves over the issue since Jan 29 when M. Muthu Kumaran, a computer operator with a PMK-owned Tamil periodical, had set himself ablaze in front of Shastri Bhavan, which houses central government offices.
