New Delhi : Delhi Police Monday said they will record the statements of the classmates of 11-year-old Shano Khan, who died last week after being allegedly subjected to corporal punishment by her teacher for not learning the English alphabets, official said.

A team led by a senior police official visited the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Girls Primary School in Bawana area of outer Delhi and collected the names and records of Shano’s classmates.

“The school has been closed since the incident so we could not record the statements. We will now record it to get to the bottom of the case,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (outer Delhi) Atul Katiyar told IANS.

“We are also waiting for the post-mortem examination report of the deceased to move further in the case,” Katiyar said, denying reports that Shano’s teacher Manju was missing.

According to police sources, Shano’s pathology reports were awaited and so far police had recorded the statements of Shano’s parents and class teacher Manju.

As per the allegation, Shano slipped into coma Wednesday after Manju made her stand under the hot sun for more than an hour after beating her for not learning the English alphabets.

The girl was shifted to the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital Thursday evening after her condition deteriorated. She died Friday afternoon.

The police said the victim used to get seizures and might have died due to shock.

Meanwhile the vigilance department of the MCD recorded the statements of the school staff members.

“The MCD vigilance team is trying to contact the students of the school. But the school has remained closed due to the prevailing situation. It has, therefore, not been possible to record the statements,” the MCD said here in a press statement Monday.
