Ahmedabad : Prime Minister Manmohan Singh does not want to press charges against a young man who hurled a shoe toward him at an election rally here Sunday, police said.

Hitesh Chauhan, a computer engineering student, was whisked away as soon as he took out one of his white sneakers and hurled it toward the prime minister, who was making a speech at the Sanskar Kendra.

He was taken to the Ellis Bridge police station for questioning, which went on till late evening.

“He is still in custody and could be let off as the prime minister does not want any action against him,” a senior Crime Branch official said.

Chauhan continued to maintain he has no political links, he said.

“He is being rigorously questioned just to ensure there were no ulterior motives. The boy is nervous and we would take some time to question him more,” he said.

“There is no case against him right now,” the official said.
