Malegaon: After the Muslim leaders assured him for working on every option to bring them justice and the real culprits of the blast behind the bar, the blast accused in the Malegaon 2006 serial blast case ended the indefinite hunger strike.
Dr. Salman Farsi, one of the blast accused detained in connection with the serial blast that rocked Malegaon on September 8, 2006 was on indefinite hunger strike since March 18 pleading he and the other accused were wrongly implicated in the case and demanding their case to be heard in a fast track court for speedy trial.
After the local leaders met him in Ratnagiri Jail on April 27 yesterday and assured him of taking every step to bring them justice, legal and in the form of representation to the government, he ended the indefinite hunger strike.
According to Advocate Mujeeb Momin, who accompanied the delegation that also included Salman’s wife and others, the local leaders persuaded Dr. Salman Farsi to end the hunger strike. “We informed him of the efforts we are taking to ensure they get the justice at the earliest and convinced him to end the hunger strike”, Advocate Momin said.
Efforts were on since last few days by the local leaders and relatives of the accused to get the permission from the court to meet Dr. Salman. Finally after Justice U. D. Shinde of Special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime (MACOCA) Court granted them the permission, the local leaders and the relatives led by Mufti Mohd Isamil met Dr. Salman in Ratnigiri Jail on April 27 and persuaded him to end the strike.
Earlier despite repeated requests from the local leaders and relatives of the accused, reportedly because of the election code of conduct, the government failed to look into the matter even as the condition of Dr. Salman kept on worsening and from Ratnigiri Civil Hospital he was shifted to JJ Hospital in Mumbai and then back to Ratnaigir Jail again. Recently, they even requested the State Governor through his Chief Secretary Rastogi and Minister of State for Home Arif Naseem Khan to intervene but with no result. “We met Governor’s Chief Secretary Rastogi and Dy. Home Minister Arif Naseem Khan and requested them to look into the matter”, Dr. Nafeesa, Salman’s wife said.
