The two women and a man had recently returned from Mexico, where the outbreak is believed to have started.

The positive tests were confirmed by the Robert Koch Institute, Germany’s national disease control centre.

Two of the cases were in the southern state of Bavaria and the third in the north German city of Hamburg, the institute said.

In Hamburg, a woman aged 22 was undergoing treatment in hospital after showing flu-like systems on her return from a trip to Mexico.

Another 37-year-old woman was undergoing treatment in the Bavarian town of Kulmbach.

The first case of human swine flu was reported earlier Monday in the town of Regensburg, north of Munich.

The victim was a man in his late 30s, who complained of chills and fever after returning form a holiday in Mexico a week ago.

Officials said tests are currently being conducted on four other people in Germany suspected of being infected with the swine flu virus.

Doctors at major airports are conducting medical tests on passengers arriving from Mexico, where most of the world’s swine flu deaths have been reported.

A flight bringing home 275 holidaymakers from the Mexican resort of Cancun was due to arrive in Munich at noon.

Germany is the third European country to confirm a human infection of swine flu after Britain and Spain.
