96 acquitted in post-Godhra riots case in Sabarkantha

New Delhi: A fast-track court in Sabarkantha district has acquitted 96 people accused in a 2002 post-Godhra riots case for want of evidence. They were accused in a case of rioting and arsoning in the Motipura area of Himmatnagar taluka in Sabarkantha district.

During the bandh called by Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on February 28 in protest against the Godhra train carnage a day earlier Muslim properties were ransacked and looted by a violent mob in Motipura locality. Nobody was killed or injured in the incident.

Following the incident, the police had registered a case of rioting against 96 people under provisions of the Indian Penal Code.

Judge Rita Vyas of the fast-track court in Himmatnagar acquitted the accused on August 1 as the prosecution could not substantiate the charges.
