Even as the police have started investigating into the matter, IIT authorities denied the case of Dhirendra Kumar could be related to a suicide attempt.

“It is a small incident that is being taken in a different manner… It should not be related to suicide attempt made under any type of academic pressure,” IIT-Kanpur director S.G. Dhande told IANS on phone.

“We have learnt that the student was having some personal problems… While undergoing treatment at the institute’s medical centre, the student told us so… He (Dhirendra) himself was not very sure what exactly would happen to him after taking the substance,” Dhande added.

According to officials, Dhirendra, who is being treated at the Regency hospital in Kanpur, is out of danger.

“We went to record statement of the student, but the doctors present there did not allow us to meet the student,” police inspector N.N. Singh told IANS.

According to police, Dhirendra Kumar consumed the poisonous substance in his hostel room and was taken to hospital late Sunday night.
