Rae Bareli: Congress president and Rae Bareli MP Sonia Gandhi Tuesday visited various rural areas in her constituency to talk to villagers if they have benefited from various central sponsored schemes.

The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson visited over a dozen villages on the second day of her three-day tour to Rae Bareil, state congress spokesperson Akhilesh Pratap singh told IANS.

She is visiting the constituency to check development works in the region.

The Congress spokesperson said Gandhi held meetings and inquired about the development works there, particularly about the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS), a flagship programme of the UPA government.

“We were surprised to see her and discussed problems with her. She has promised all possible help for our development,” said Mangat Ram, a Goganpur villager.

Gandhi during her first visit to her constituency after the Lok Sabha election visited some sites where NREGS work is on and asked for the list of people employed there.

“From the list, she called a number of people and talked to them personally. She also asked officials to ensure proper implementation of NREGS projects,” said Shivendra Kumar, a block coordinator of the Ahiryar village.

Gandhi inaugurated a newly constructed hostel building in the Feroze Gandhi Institute of Engineering and Technology in Rae Bareli. In the evening she offered prayers at Baleshwar temple.
