Ranchi : Police seized 400 country-made bombs, 30 mobile phones and cash from Jharkhand’s Garwah district jail during a raid early Monday, officials said, adding that the prisoners might have been planning an escape.
A police team headed by Deputy Superintendent of Police Satyendra Singh and Sub Divisional Officer Robin Toppo raided the Garwah jail at around 3.30 a.m Monday. They seized 30 mobile phones, 26 chargers, 400 country-made bombs and Rs.7,800 in cash among other things, a police official said.
Many hardened criminals and about half dozen Maoist rebels are lodged in Garwah jail.
“It seems that the criminals were planning to escape from the jail,” Satyendra Singh told reporters.
Garwah Deputy Commissioner Vijay Kumar Singh has constituted a three-member team to probe how the explosives reached the jail premises.
According to police sources, Garwah jail houses 494 prisoners against a capacity of 98 and there are only eight constables to guard them even though there are 39 approved posts. Also, the jail does not have a regular superintendent since February.
