Gilani seeks drone technology from US

Islamabad : Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has urged the US to provide drone technology to Pakistan, a media report said. He also demanded an end to the US drone attacks inside Pakistan.

Gilani made the request during a meeting with US special envoy to Pakistan and Afghanistan Richard Holbrooke at his home Monday. He also discussed a range of other issues, The News reported.

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Interior Minister Rehman Malik, State Minister for Finance Hina Rabbani Khar, US ambassador Ann W. Patterson and other officials were also present at the meeting.

The prime minister said innocent people were getting killed in the drone attacks, as the technology cannot identify the terrorists among the civilians.

He asked the US to provide drone technology to Pakistan so that the Pakistan Army can take action against the militants.

He said the ongoing army operation against the Taliban in Swat has the backing of the parliament, political and religious leadership.

Holbrooke said he is impressed with the success of the military operation in northwest Pakistan.

He assured that US will provide full assistance to Pakistan for rehabilitation of the displaced people, the newspaper said.
