The UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) said it urgently needs $181 million to help one million refugees in the coastal enclave.

The appeal comes on the eve of the holy month of Ramadan as the situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate.

The civic facilities there have been destroyed during the military offensive between Israeli forces and Gaza militants.

The money will be used to purchase essential commodities, repair the damaged houses, among others.

It is a pity that refugees in the Gaza Strip still have to live under intolerable conditions, the UN agency said in a statement.

Reconstruction is now just an “illusion”. “A large number of refugees will stand a small chance in the coming harsh winter,” it said. Lack of water, energy, jobs and public health facilities are deteriorating the situation.
