New Delhi : Flights out of the national capital were either rescheduled or cancelled Friday evening following torrential rains that also damaged a portion of the new domestic terminal building, airport officials said.
“The sudden downpour required us to first divert all incoming flights,” said an official at the Air Traffic Control. “We also advised all airlines to hold outgoing flights till the conditions improve.”
An official at the airport confirmed that most incoming flights were diverted, while operations were stalled for outbound operations.
“In this downpour, a small portion of the roof above Terminal 1D caved in,” the official said, adding that the damage was not significant.
“No one was injured in the incident.”
Heavy rains lashed the capital from around 2.30 p.m. and within an hour there was disorder on the streets with reports of waterlogging and resultant traffic snarls on several arterial roads. The downpour finally ended around 5.15 p.m.
