President sends Azamgarh residents’ petition to UP Govt for action

New Delhi: Giving importance to the memorandum of the prominent residents of Azamgarh wherein they had sought President of India’s intervention in bringing the BJP MP from Azamgarh Ramakant Yadav, a murder accused, to book, the Rashtrapati Bhavan on August 25 sent the memo to the Uttar Pradesh Government for appropriate action.

Under the banner of the citizens’ group Association for Welfare, Medical, Educational and Legal Assistance (AWMELA), eminent residents of the district had on August 14 sent the petition to the President Pratibha Patil condemning the BJP MP’s attack on the unarmed workers of the Ulema Council on August 12 in the Phoolpur area of the district, killing one youth and injuring many others, and demanding his immediate arrest.

The Secretariat of the President considered the petition and now has sent it to the UP Chief Minister’s secretariat for appropriate action and asked the petitioner to further liaise in the matter directly with Special Secretary , Government of Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Sectt., Annexe Bhavan, Uttar Pradesh Sachivalaya, Lucknow for further information.

Meanwhile, succumbing to the mounting pressure on the police to arrest the MP who has been named in the FIR by the Ulema Council for the murder of its youth, the MP was yesterday arrested.

AWMELA in its memorandum had also condemned fake Police encounters like Sohrabuddin, Batla House, Manipur and demanded time bound high level probe under judicial supervision for all such fake encounters. The group also deplored NHRC report on Batla House encounter.

The group is preparing to send a fresh petition to the President regarding their demand in the Batla House encounter case.
