Karnataka beat Baroda to seal quarter-final berth

New Delhi: Karnataka became the first team to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Ranji Trophy Super League after crushing Baroda by an innings and 102 runs at Vadodara Thursday.

Karnataka imposed the follow on after Baroda, resuming from overnight 137/9, folded up for 153 in the first innings, falling short by 335 runs.

Led by Vinay Kumar and Abhimanyu Mithun, Karnataka bowlers once again did a brilliant job, bowling out Baroda for 233 in their second innings on the third day.

Irfan Pathan was the only batsman to put up a fight in both the innings, Pathan followed up his 68 in the first innings with 83 in teh second, but got little help from the other end.

Vinay Kumar finished with three wickets, while Robin Uthappa, Mithun and Sreesanth Aravind chipped in with two apiece.

Karnataka thus registered their second successive innings victory, having beaten Maharashtra in their previous match. They lead Group B with 23 points from three wins in five matches.

At Mohali, Punjab defeated Himachal Pradesh by eight wickets for their second victory of the season.

Punjab knocked off the victory target of 94 runs losing two wickets with Vishwas Bhalla (36 not out) and Ravi Inder Singh (32) doing the bulk of the scoring.

Manpreet Gony’s match haul of 10 wickets set up the match for Punjab.

After being packed off for 197 in the first innings, Himachal Pradesh fought their way back into the match, bowling out the hosts for 186 Wednesday. But Gony, who took five wickets in the first innings, bowled a deadly spell (five for 21) that saw Himachal Pradesh surrender for just 82 in the second innings.
