India bowled out Sri Lanka for 309 in their second innings half-an-hour after the start of play on the fifth and final morning.

The visiting team were packed off for 393 in the first innings and India piled up 726 with Virender Sehwag scoring a sensational 293 and Mahendra Singh Dhoni making an unbeaten century.

India, thus, displaced South Africa as the top Test team in the world.

Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara was the lone man standing in between India and victory. Sangakkara (137) stood valiantly to score a century even as wickets fell around him and Sri Lanka ended the fourth day’s play at 274 for six, still trailing by 59 runs.

Sangakkara was dismissed in the very first over Sunday by Zaheer Khan (5-72) and the Sri Lankan resistance ended in the next six overs.
