Chandigarh: This union territory will develop a new facility for providing transport-related logistics, said a senior official here Tuesday.
“We have started the process for acquiring around 75 acres to develop a new Transport Nagar, and will hire a consultant to prepare the master plan,” said UT finance secretary Sanjay Kumar here Tuesday.
The Chandigarh Transport Association has for long been demanding that the existing facility in Sector 26 be expanded or a new site be allotted to cope with the hundreds of trucks that arrive here daily from various states leading to traffic snarl-ups.
The present facility, spread over only 15 acres, falls within the city and there is little scope for expansion.
“The land earmarked for the (new) project has many positional advantages. It provides direct connectivity with the Chandigarh-Ambala road and is close to the new railway freight terminal that will facilitate goods transportation,” said Kumar.
“This new site will have a capacity to accommodate more than 2,000 trucks. It would have various facilities like service stations, proper drainage facility, regularised parking, weigh-bridge, petrol pump, hotels and public toilets.”
Kumar said the project would bring down traffic snarl-ups and that it could be expanded in future as per requirements.
Chandigarh is one of the most well-planned cities of the country and was designed by legendary French architect Le Corbusier in the 1950s.
