Punjab’s medical education minister quits over infants’ death

Chandigarh : Punjab’s Medical Education and Research Minister Tikshan Sud Sunday submitted his resignation owning moral responsibility for the death of five infants in a hospital fire in Patiala Saturday.

Sud sent his resignation to the leadership of his party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), to be forwarded to Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.

There has been no word from Badal whether Sud’s resignation has been forwarded to Governor S.F. Rodrigues for acceptance.

Five infants, all three to six days old, died at the government-run Rajindra Medical College and Hospital in Patiala town, 80 km from here, Saturday morning after the tubelight of a photo-therapy unit burst and fire spread in the entire children’s ward.

Five other infants received burn injuries. One of them had to be rushed to the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh as her condition was serious.
