Samajwadi Party lawmaker arrested in kidnapping case

Lucknow : A Samajwadi Party (SP) lawmaker Ashok Singh Chandel was arrested in Uttar Pradesh in connection with an abduction case, police said Monday.

“Chandel and one of his aides were arrested in Viveknagar locality in Hamirpur, 350 km from Lucknow, in a kidnapping case,” Additional Director General (law and order) Brij Lal told reporters here.

Chandel, who is a member of the state assembly, was presented in the court and remanded in judicial custody.

Six others involved in the case are yet to be arrested, the official added.

According to the police, the lawmaker and eight of his aides had kidnapped Parashuram Kushwaha of Hamirpur district in 2006. A case was registered against Chandel and eight others in Kotwali police station of Hamirpur.

“A CJM (chief judicial magistrate) court in Hamirpur had already issued non-bailable warrant against Chandel Jan 31,” Additional Superintendent of Police Ashok Kumar Pandey told IANS by phone.

The SP has announced Chandel as its Lok Sabha candidate from Hamirpur-Mahoba seat.
