School principal held for disrespecting national anthem

Bhopal : The principal of a convent school here, accused of disrespecting the national anthem during the Republic Day function Jan 26, has been arrested, the police said Monday.

“A case was registered against the principal of St Thomas convent School, Thomas Malkacherupil, Jan 31 for disrupting the singing of the national anthem after a complaint by a teacher. He was now been arrested,” additional superintendent of police A.K. Pandey said.

Vedprakash Gupta, the school PT teacher who was conducting the Republic Day programme, told IANS that the national anthem was not allowed to be sung by the principal after hoisting the tricolour.

“When I objected, Malkacherupil suspended me,” Gupta said.

Earlier in the day, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) workers staged a demonstration outside the school premises demanding the arrest of the principal.

As many as 12 ABVP workers were also arrested.
