One Russian-made Grad rocket landed in an empty area in Ashkelon, some 13 km from the Gaza border, the farthest a rocket reached inside Israel since the end of an Israeli offensive on the salient Jan 18, the report quoted an Israeli army spokesman as saying.

He added that two other homemade rockets landed at the Western Negev area, causing no damage or injury.

Hamas government spokesman Taher al-Noono earlier said that Israel was falsely blaming rocket attacks “in order to find an excuse to keep its tight blockade on the Gaza Strip”.

Israel and Hamas-led militant groups in Gaza declared a ceasefire Jan 18, ending the 22-day Israeli military offensives in the Strip. Both Gaza militants and Israel, however, continued to exchange sporadic missile attacks.

Egypt has been trying to broker a longer-term truce between the two sides. Currently, a Hamas delegation is in Cairo to discuss the matter.
