Bhopal : Miffed over the growing proximity of Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav to rebel Bharatiya Janata Party leader Kalyan Singh, over two dozen Samajwadi activists quit the party in Madhya Pradesh Sunday. The resignations come a day after former state president Narayan Tripathi resigned from the party’s primary membership, saying the party’s secular credentials have been put at stake with Mulayam Singh getting closer to Kalyan Singh who was involved in the demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1992.
Samajwadi Party leaders are also angry because the party has nominated Deep Narayan Yadav from Uttar Pradesh as new the state president.
Tripathi convened a meeting of party workers and told them how they were first humiliated by the imposition of a leader from the neighbouring state of Uttar Pradesh.
He said now the party’s secular credentials were at stake after Kalyan Singh and Mulayam Singh got together.
Prominent among those who quit the party include former state party general secretary K.R. Yadav, vice-president Tikaram Narwaria and secretary Yadunath Singh.
Tripathi was removed as state president following the party’s poor show in the November assembly polls.
