Basnet had left the prime minister’s official residence at Baluwatar around 5 p.m. and was nearing his own residence in the Koteshwor area when he was shot by unidentified attackers, Prachanda’s media adviser Om Sharma said.

The aide, who is also a member of the central committee of the Maoist party, was rushed to the B&B Hospital in Lalitpur city where doctors said he was shot in the leg. Basnet’s condition is stable.

This is the first incident of a senior political figure being attacked in the capital since the Maoists ended their armed insurrection and came to power through an election last year.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
